Carbon Transparency Project (CDP)
In this article; we will examine CDP, which is a leading source and supporter of transparent data sharing and sustainable actions in the sustainability sector, where reliable data flow is critically important.
What is CDP?
Founded in 2000 in England, CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) is an organization that encourages companies, cities, and regions to measure and report their environmental impacts, providing support in this regard. This non-profit organization operates in nearly 100 countries today.
CDP's Areas of Work
Climate Change:
Data sharing about greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks of companies and cities.
Water Security:
Highlighting risks and management strategies related to water use with a platform that evaluates the water management performance of companies.
Forests:
Risk analysis regarding the damages companies cause to forests and developing strategies for the protection of forests.
Plastic Use:
Encouraging organizations to report plastic usage and, in addition, to reduce the plastic materials used.
The Role of CDP
Carbon Emission Reporting:
CDP enables companies and cities to measure and report their carbon emissions. With this reliable and detailed reporting, CDP helps investors and stakeholders to clearly see the performance of companies in the face of the climate crisis and the risks they bear.
Sustainability Strategies:
CDP assists companies in developing new strategies to achieve the goals they have set in this area by analyzing and reporting their sustainability performance in detail.
Transparent Data:
Since its inception, CDP has advocated for the transparency of environmental impact data: it provides reliable data to necessary authorities and the business world in the fields of climate change mitigation and sustainability.
CDP Disclosure Scoring System
CDP rates the organizations it calls for transparency in a later process with a 'score' system. In this system, the letters A, B, C, D, and F are used to name the sustainability performance of institutions.
Failing Transparency (F)
It is the score given to firms that do not respond to CDP's call or do not provide full transparency on data sharing. It does not actually indicate low sustainability performance; it only expresses that the desired data could not be obtained from the institution.
Transparency (D or D-)
It indicates that the requested data from the institution has been received in the desired format.
Awareness (C or C-)
It shows that the institution clearly visualizes and reports the relationship between its environmental impacts and the activities it undertakes. Institutions with this rating have not yet taken action in this regard.
Management (B or B-)
This score indicates the actions taken by institutions that are aware of their environmental impacts and are working to manage these impacts through various actions.
Leadership (A or A-)
To attain a leadership status, institutions must use all resources in the field of sustainability as efficiently as possible and take exemplary actions. These actions should be recognized by both CDP and its partners and should be a reflection of the environmental policies adopted by CDP.
Why is CDP Important?
CDP, with the awareness it creates in the field of sustainability, ensures that investors consider the environmental impacts of companies. In this context, CDP also shares detailed and transparent information with investors regarding the environmental impacts and sustainability performances of companies. As financing becomes sensitive in this regard, CDP encourages companies, cities, and investors to set ambitious goals in sustainability and to take concrete actions in line with these goals.
Conclusion
CDP increases the accountability of companies and cities with its global leadership in environmental data collection and reporting. In addition, it helps develop strategies to reduce the environmental impacts of institutions and provides the necessary tools in the most transparent way to take concrete steps in this direction.
